Cepharanthine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid from tubers of Stephania sp. first reported by Japanese researchers, Kondo and Keimatsu, in 1938. Cepharanthine exhibits a wide range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antitumor, cytoprotective and antibacterial. Cepharanthine inhibits AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and NFkappaB signaling pathways. Cepharanthine has been used as a therapeutic agent in Japan since the 1950s. Source: Stephania sp.
