Importin-9 (IPO9) is a molecular transporter and chaperone that belongs to the super-family of karyopherins. It binds primarily to stem-loop structure 1 in IFN-epsilon5UTR, and negatively impacts mRNA expression. Importins, including Importin-9, are known for their ability to mediate active transport through nuclear pore complexes and effectively suppress the aggregation of their basic import cargoes in polyanionic environments. Importins exert their functions through protein-protein interactions, they recognize nuclear localization signals and prevent protein aggregation by shielding basic patches such as those found in a variety of ribosomal proteins.
