BAP1 (BRCA1-associated protein 1) functions as a deubiquitinase that catalyzes the removal of ubiquitin from target proteins, and has roles in ubiquitin maturation, recycling, and editing activities. BAP1 has been shown to interact with the RING finger domain of BRCA1 and have overlapping subnuclear localization patterns. In studies in cancer, BAP1 protein can function both as a tumor suppressor and as a metastasis suppressor, thus is a valuable target of study.
