It is released in response to stretching of atrial walls, Endothelin, and stimulation of ?-adrenoreceptors. ANP increases renal sodium excretion resulting in decreased expanded extracellular fluid volume (ECF). ANP is degraded by neutral endopeptidase (NEP). This is a 21-aa bioactive peptide found in frog heart extract with diuretic/natriuretic and vasorelaxant activities.
