Calcitonin is a hypocalcemic hormone produced by the parafollicular C cells of the thyroid or by the ultimobranchial bodies of non-mammalian vertebrates. It decreases blood calcium and phosphate due to inhibition of resorption by osteoblasts and osteocytes. Calcitonin salmon [Des-Tyr22] is an analogue of calcitonin with reduced adenylate cyclase activation activity (in vitro). In isolated rat pituitary cells it exhibits lowered inhibitory activity for prolactin release.
