It is a potent vasoconstrictor that is expressed by many cell types, with the vascular endothelium being most prominent. ET-1 is also produced by many tissues, including kidney, brain and lung among others. Antagonists of ET-1 receptors are used to treat pulmonary hypertension by inhibiting pulmonary vascular constriction thereby decreasing pulmonary vascular resistance.
