Cruzain is the major cysteine protease of Trypanosoma cruzi, the protozoan parasite responsible for American trypanosomiasis or Chagas disease. Cruzain is essential for the replication of the parasite and thus is a new target for antitrypanosomal chemotherapy. Bromo-PTC is a potent inhibitor of cruzain (IC50 = 100 nM) which exhibits trypanocidal activity in cultured host cells without toxicity1.
