Azoramide is a modulator of the unfolded protein response (UPR).1 It improves endoplasmic reticulum (ER) protein folding and activates ER chaperone capacity to protect cells against ER stress. It displayed potent anti-diabetic activity in two mouse models by improving insulin sensitivity and pancreatic beta cell function. Azoramide increased SERCA expression leading to enhanced calcium retention in the ER indicating calcium homeostasis as a possible mechanism for its anti-diabetic acitivty.
