NFAT inhibitor is a high affinity calcineurin binding peptide which acts as a selective inhibitor of the interaction of calcineurin with the transcription factor nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT), which it does without affecting calcineurin phosphatase activity or non-NFAT-mediated signaling. Activation of NFAT by calcineurin is a key step in T cell activation and accordingly NFAT inhibitor peptide blocks NFAT activation and NFAT dependent expression of endogenous T cell cytokine genes. Other cytokines that require calcineurin but not NFAT are not affected. NFAT inhibition by NFAT inhibitor peptide is an effective strategy to quench inflammation and hypertrophy.
