CD36 peptide is derived from CD36 (cluster of differentiation 36), also known as platelet glycoprotein 4 or fatty acid translocase (FAT), a plasma membrane protein of wide cellular distribution which functions as a receptor for thrombospondin (TSP). CD36 peptide blocks binding of CD36 to TSP and partially inhibits collagen induced platelet aggregation, but does not itself bind to TSP. TSP1 plays a pivotal role in obesity related inflammation and insulin resistance by modulating macrophage accumulation and activation in adipose tissue, and CD36 peptide, functioning as a TSP1 antagonist, effectively inhibits this activation. In an obese mouse model, CD36 peptide treatment does not affect obesity or weight gain but attenuates systemic inflammation and reduces proinflammatory cytokine production. CD36 peptide treatment improves glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity and mitigates obesity related fatty liver disease and kidney damage.
