Averantin is an anthraquinone pigment and polyhydroxyanthraquinone compound. Averantin serves as a biosynthetic precursor of averufin, and is positioned after norsolorinic acid and before averufin in the aflatoxin B1 biosynthetic pathway. Its conversion to aflatoxin B1 does not require an intermediate step of degradation into acetate. Averantin exhibits inhibitory activity against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus[1][2][3].
