5,7-Dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT) hydrobromide is a neurotoxin that selectively damages serotonergic (5-HT) and noradrenergic (NE) neurons in the brain. 5,7-Dihydroxytryptamine hydrobromide, as an autofluorescent serotonin derivative, binds to the high-affinity transporters of these neurons and is selectively taken up, followed by intracellular metabolism to generate reactive oxygen species, which causes axonal terminal degeneration and neurochemical depletion. 5,7-Dihydroxytryptamine hydrobromide is applicable to neuroscience research[1][2][3][4].
