SMURF2 protein is an E3 ubiquitin protein ligase that interacts with SMAD7 to induce ubiquitin-dependent degradation of TGF-beta receptors and downregulate TGF-beta signaling. This interaction triggers autocatalytic degradation of SMURF2 and is antagonized by AIMP1.
