The ADH4 protein is a specific alcohol dehydrogenase that primarily functions as a mitochondrial formaldehyde dehydrogenase with a unique ethanol preference. It does not affect ethanol production and exhibits reduced activity on primary alcohols with four or more carbon atoms.
