The KARS protein promotes attachment of amino acids to its cognate tRNA through a two-step reaction, inducing immune responses through monocyte/macrophage activation. In microbial infections, it interacts with the HIV-1 GAG protein to enable selective tRNA(3)(Lys) packaging to initiate reverse transcription.
