Angiopoietin-2 (ANGPT2) protein competes with ANGPT1 for TEK/TIE2 binding, modulates ANGPT1 signaling and induces TEK/TIE2 phosphorylation even in the absence of ANGPT1. In the absence of angiogenic stimulation, ANGPT2 disrupts cell-matrix contacts, potentially triggering endothelial cell apoptosis and vessel regression.
