The MMGT1 protein is an important member of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein complex (EMC) and is essential for the independent insertion of newly synthesized membrane proteins into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane. Its preference for transmembrane domains with weak hydrophobicity or unstable characteristics guides co- and post-translational insertion processes.
