It functions as a chain terminator when incorporated into nascent DNA strands by HIV reverse transcriptase, effectively inhibiting DNA synthesis due to the absence of a 3-hydroxyl group, thereby blocking viral replication. The IC50 for WTHIV is 15.6 µM, and for AZTRHIV, it is 160.8 µM. This compound exhibits antiviral activity.
