Isotachysterol 3 is an open-ring steroid compound that is a structurally similar analog of active vitamin D and also serves as an impurity in the production of vitamin D3. In a rat model without kidneys, isotachysterol 3 significantly stimulates intestinal calcium transport and bone calcium mobilization. Isotachysterol 3 can be used in studies of vitamin D metabolism that do not rely on renal 1alpha-hydroxylation.
