Elastase, Rat (EC 3.4.21.35) is an elastase enzyme synthesized by pancreatic acinar cells, initially existing as an inactive zymogen, and subsequently activated by trypsin in the duodenum. This enzyme is part of the serine protease subfamily, characterized by its unique structure, comprising two beta-barrel domains converging at the active site. Elastase, Rat hydrolyzes amide and ester bonds in various proteins, including elastin, a connective tissue protein linking organs.
