beta-Xylosidase, derived from Lactobacillus brevis (EC 3.2.1.37), is capable of releasing reducing sugars from birchwood xylan and catalyzing the hydrolysis of 4-methylumbelliferyl-beta-D-cellobioside and 4-methylumbelliferyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside. It lacks endo-xylanase, arabinoxylanase, or beta-glucanase activity. Post-translational modifications of beta-xylosidase include glycosylation.
