Superoxide Dismutase, Roxburgh (EC 1.15.1.1), catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen. It plays a crucial role in protecting cells from the toxic effects of oxygen radicals. Additionally, Superoxide Dismutase competes with nitric oxide (NO) for superoxide anions (which react with NO to form peroxynitrite), thereby enhancing the activity of NO.
