ICAM-1, also known as CD54 (Cluster of Differentiation 54), belongs to the ICAM proteins. This protein is ligand for the leukocyte adhesion protein LFA-1 (integrin alpha-L/beta-2). When activated, leukocytes bind to endothelial cells via ICAM-1/LFA-1 and then transmigrate into tissues. During leukocyte trans-endothelial migration, ICAM-1 engagement promotes the assembly of endothelial apical cups through ARHGEF26/SGEF and RHOG activation. It is constitutively present on endothelial cells, but its expression is increased by proinflammatory cytokines. Also, It has been implicated in the progression of autoimmune diseases.
