Tylvalosin is an anti-bacterial agent that is shown through study as a good inhibitor of gram-positive bacteria and a 16-membered semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic commonly used in veterinary research. It is bacteriostatic and binds to the 23S rRNA of the 50S ribosomal unit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It has activity against Gram-positive bacteria and Mycoplasmas. Formulations containing Tylvalosin have been used against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in swine, that casues enzootic pneumonia. Since the compound can cause hypersensitivity reactions in laboratory animals.
