A highly potent and selective antagonist of adenosine A2A receptor (Ki = 600pM). Does not affect the activity of other adenosine receptors in any significant manner (Ki = 287nM, 5uM, and > 10uM for A1, A2B, and A3 receptors, respectively). Displays neuroprotective effects in cerebral ischaemia in rats, and shown to counteract Parkinsonian-like muscle rigidity in rats.
