3-Formyl rifamycin is a drug that belongs to the class of amines. It is an anti-tuberculosis drug with acidic properties, which can be synthesized from n-demethyl rifampin. 3-Formyl rifamycin has been shown to have significant anti-tuberculosis activity in murine sarcoma virus and chemical stability in vitro. 3-Formyl rifamycin also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. The kinetic data for this reaction was obtained using nitrogen atoms as a probe and it was found that this compound reacts through a transfer reaction mechanism where nitrogens are transferred from one reactant to another.
