Peplomycin sulfate is a biocompatible polymer that is used as an antimicrobial drug. It binds to the membrane of bacteria, which disrupts the cells energy metabolism and leads to cell death. Peplomycin sulfate has been shown to be effective against a number of infectious diseases, including acute toxicities. The compound is also an antioxidant, capable of scavenging free radicals, and may have anti-cancer properties. Peplomycin sulfate is not active against Gram-positive bacteria due to the absence of lipopolysaccharide in their cell membranes.
