Dihydro tagetone is an indole alkaloid that is found in the roots of Tagetes minuta, a plant in the daisy family. It can be extracted from this plant using a solid phase microextraction technique. Dihydro tagetone has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties as well as cytotoxic effects on lung fibroblasts. Additionally, it has been shown to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus when exposed to concentrations of hydrochloric acid or methyl ethyl ketone. Dihydro tagetone also possesses insecticidal properties and has been used as a chemical pesticide. The mechanism by which it inhibits growth is unknown, but may be due to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthesis.
