Guaiazulene or azulon, a derivative of azulene, is an active ingredient used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It is a natural compound found in the essential oil of guaiacum and has historically been used for medicinal purposes due to its antioxidant properties. Guaiazulene is also an anti-inflammatory with immunosuppressant properties that has been used to treat chronic inflammation and esophageal candidiasis. It has been demonstrated that guaiazulene can act as a cytotoxic agent as well as an inhibitor of lipid peroxidation and hexafluorophosphate-induced DNA damage. Additionally, it inhibits tumor growth and exhibits antimicrobial activity against oral cavity pathogens. Some studies showed promising results on the potential use of guaiazulene to treat chronic conditions such as arthritis and as stem cell-related treatment.
