Monobenzone is a skin-lightening agent that belongs to the group of dithiocarbamates. It is used as a topical medication for the treatment of skin diseases such as vitiligo and acne. Monobenzone inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin synthesis, by binding to its active site. This compound also has been shown to have chemotherapeutic activity against cancer tissues and infectious diseases. Monobenzone is used in analytical methods to determine the presence of melanoma antigen in blood plasma and other body fluids. Monobenzone reacts with potassium dichromate to form a red-orange precipitate, which can be measured spectrophotometrically at 590nm.
