Niclosamide monohydrate is one of the effective and mostly widely used molluscicides or pesticides, used to control schistosomiasis disease, which is caused by molluscs species like snails. Commonly known as an antihelminthic drug, it is used in the treatment of tapeworms. It has also been used as a molluscicide in water treatment, and more recently there are several reports of niclosamide showing anticancer activity. Like other salicylanilides, niclosamide translocates hydrogen into the inner membrane of the mitochondria, uncoupling the oxidative phosphorylation from the electron transport and inhibiting the creation of ATP. Niclosamide monohydrate is an inhibitor of STAT3 with IC50 of 0.25uM in HeLa cells and inhibits DNA replication in a cell-free assay.
