Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) is a bile acid that is naturally present in the body. It has been found to protect against cell membrane injury and to improve recovery from kidney injury. TUDCA also inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6 and TNF-alpha, by binding to the protein bcl-2. This prevents apoptosis and promotes cell survival. In addition, TUDCA has been shown to have antioxidant properties that may be due to its ability to bind with reactive oxygen species (ROS). The anti-inflammatory effects of TUDCA are thought to be mediated by its ability to decrease the production of ROS and inhibit NF-kappaB activation.
