PFDN5 belongs to the prefoldin alpha subunit family. Prefoldin (PFDN), a ubiquitously expressed heterohexameric co-chaperone, is necessary for proper folding of nascent proteins, in particular, tubulin and actin. PFDN5 is one of six subunits of prefoldin, a molecular chaperone complex that binds and stabilizes newly synthesized polypeptides, thereby allowing them to fold correctly. This protein may also repress the transcriptional activity of the proto-oncogene c-Myc.
