Cepharadione A has been shown to have damaging effects on human cells. It is a lactam compound and exhibits potent inhibitory activity against the enzyme apigenin, which is responsible for synthesis of the hormone oxytocin. Cepharadione A also inhibits the production of galactose, which is an important component in DNA synthesis. This compound has been found to be present in both Aristolochia species, namely Aristolochia nigrum and Aristolochia indica.
