(R)-(+)-alpha,alpha-Diphenyl-2-pyrrolidinemethanol is proven to have amphetamine-like effects and is being used for recreational drug use. It is one of a new class of synthetic stimulants known as pipradol derivatives. It inibits neurite growth in PC12 cells which contributes to its neurotoxic effects. It is used as a reagent in the synthesis of (S)-duloxetine which is an antidepressant drug. It is used to prepare chiral Corey-Bakshi-Shibata catalyst which is used in organic synthesis.
