Avenanthramide E is a member of complex of phenolics produced by oats (Avena sativa) isolated and synthesised by Collins, Food Research Centre, Agriculture Canada in 1989. Structurally avenanthramides are a fusion of cinnamic and anthranilic acids. Specifically, avenanthramide E is a conjugate of ferulic acid and anthranilic acid. Avenanthramide E acts as a plant phytoalexin and antioxidant to protect oats in response to pathogen attack. Avenathramide E has been patented as a lipoxygenase inhibitor and is the demethyl analogue of the antiallergic drug, tranilast.
