It is the most potent inhibitor of human cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) and inhibits other enzymes such as dioxygenases and amidases. 2-Amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline has been shown to have carcinogenic potential in rats and may be hazardous to humans at high doses, however, the levels of this compound found in humans are usually below those that would cause harm.
