Cycloheximide is an antibiotic produced by S. griseus. Its main biological activity is translation inhibition in eukaryotes, resulting in inhibition of protein synthesis leading to cell growth, cell arrest and cell death. CHX is widely used for selection of CHX resistant yeast and fungi strains, controlled inhibition of protein synthesis for detection of short-lived proteins and super-induction of protein expression, apoptosis induction or facilitation of apoptosis induction of death receptors. Synonyms: 4-[(2R)-2-[(1S,3S,5S)-3,5-Dimethyl-2-oxocyclohexyl]-2-hydroxyethyl]-2,6-piperidinedione, 3-[2-(3,5-Dimethyl-2-oxocyclohexyl)-2-hydroxyethyl]glutarimide, Naramycin A, Acti-Aid, Acti-dione, Acti-dione BR, Acti-dione PM, Acti-dione TGF, Actidion, CHX, Cicloheximide, FT 3422-2, NSC 185, Naramycin, Naramycin Microcapsule D 80, Naramycin NM-MCU 80, TZA, U 4527, beta-[2-(3,5-Dimethyl-2-oxocyclohexyl)- 2-hydroxyethyl]glutarimide CAS No: 66-81-9 Molecular Formula: C15H23NO4 Molecular Weight: 281.35 Appearance: Off-white crystalline powder Potency: 940ug/mg Specific Rotation (C=1, CHCl3): -26 to -32 Identification (IR): Conforms to reference Loss on Drying: 0.3% Melting Point: 106-121C Residue on Ignition: <0.2% Solubility (2.1g/100ml): Highly soluble in chloroform, methanol, ethanol and acetone. Sparingly soluble in water (2.1g/100ml, 2C). Very slightly soluble in saturated hydrocarbons. Applications: Cycloheximide is a strong protein synthesis inhibitor and is used primarily in the selection of wild type CAN1, CYH2, and LYS2 genes.
