Progesterone also known as P4 (pregn-4-ene-3,20-dione) is a C-21 steroid hormone involved in the female menstrual cycle, pregnancy (supports gestation) and embryogenesis of humans and other species. Progesterone belongs to a class of hormones called progestogens, and is the major naturally occurring human progestogen. Precursor: 4-Pregnen-11a-3,20-dione Solubility: Most steroids dissolve in organic solvents (eg. DMSO, THF, Acetone, Acetonitrile), however researchers should follow known or published procedures for optimal solvency. If an oil-based solution is required, we recommend a surfactant such as Freunds Adjuvant following initial dilution with organic solvent. For use in vivo, refer to Mathis et al (1994) Psychopharmacology 116:210-206. Storage and Stability: Lyophilized powder and reconstituted products must be stored at 4C. For long-term storage, aliquot and store at 4C. Do not freeze. Aliquots are stable for 6 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
