This peptide represents a sequence within the conserved region of the carboxyl terminus of the group A streptococcal M protein. Antibodies to this peptide were able to opsonise isolates of streptococci from Aboriginal and Thai subjects with acute rheumatic fever as well as reference strains of different M types. It may therefore find application in the preparation of a vaccine for rheumatic fever.
