| The GATA family of transcription factors, including GATA-1, GATA-2, GATA-3, GATA-4, GATA-5 and GATA-6, bind the consensus DNA sequence 5-WGATAR-3. A related factor, OSP-1, also binds to this sequence. Members of the GATA family share a conserved zinc finger DNA-binding domain but differ in their patterns of expression. GATA1 plays an important role in erythroid development by regulating the switch of fetal hemoglobin to adult hemoglobin. Mutations in this gene have been associated with X-linked dyserythropoietic anemia and thrombocytopenia. |
