The Complement System
The complement system is part of the intricate immune surveillance system to discriminate among healthy host tissue, dead cells and foreign intruders.
Traditionally, the immune system is divided into two parts: the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system. The adaptive immune system plays a key role in the development of specific antibodies to specific targets. In contrast, the innate immune system reacts in a generic way to patterns of pathogen- or damage-associated molecules.
The complement system is a complex hub like network of proteins, reactions and processes. More than 40 proteins, fluid-phased, cell-surface associated and intra-cellular proteins functions together to maintain immunosurveillance and homeostasis of our body. If not properly controlled and regulated, the complement system has the potential to harm the host. Therefore, complement activation is precisely modulated in a very specific manner and under control by many regulatory proteins.

Wieslab Functional Assays
The Svar functional complement assays under the Wieslab® brand were developed together with a network of global key opinion leaders (KOLs) in 2005 and have since been used to answer the need for an easy to use method of detecting complement deficiencies and to explore the effect of complement targeting drugs. With the novel functional Factor P assay, Svar enables in-depth study of Properdin and the AP amplification loop, essential for the complement response.
Complement targeting drugs can be evaluated by the Wieslab® functional complement assays, for efficacy and potency determination, which has been shown in several scientific papers as well as presented at complement conferences. Scientific papers also suggest an application for the functional assays in monitoring complement drugs during clinical trials. The format of the assays can be used with a wide variety of open systems, individual research protocols and automation. This has made the Wieslab® Complement assays much-appreciated by the biotech and pharma industry.
